Dear Member or Supporter,
I regret that I have to tell you that we have had to make the decision to cancel the conference in Swansea. I know this will be a great disappointment for those who
wish to attend, but unfortunately the number of people who have applied to attend is so small that the cost of running the conference would represent an extremely heavy
burden on our income. We have had to make the decision now because the cost of cancellation increases very significantly a month before the date of the conference.
We are grateful to the hotel which has agreed to offset the income from any of our booked rooms which are subsequently sold against the cost of the cancellation. Those of you who have already paid will receive a full refund.
There has been a downward trend in the number of people attending the conference over the past 10 years; last year, for instance, 25% fewer attended than the year
before. This is in spite of the fact that Caroline has managed to keep the cost of the conference down over the past few years. As you know, we have been concerned
about attendance for some time and had intended only having a full conference every other year in order to try and boost numbers. This has confirmed us in our view that we should only run it every other year. The next full conference will be in 2016, the centenary year.
The office will be distributing a survey on conferences and I would ask that all of you complete and return this. We need to be sure what our members and supporters
would like. In the meantime we will probably hold a day meeting later in the year. Many of you will wonder about an annual general meeting. Under the new
constitution the annual general meeting must be held within 18 months of the foundation of gain. So this will take place next year in one of the day meetings that
we intend to run. In the meantime, as the GBSSG was merged with gain, the GBSSG 2013 accounts and annual report will sent for approval by the members
under the terms of the new constitution in a postal and email ballot.
